Program Description
Japanese Language Class *Taught in Japanese
- 50 min × 3 classes × 9 days = 1,350 min = 22.5 hours
- Class contents: Conversation, reading, writing
Japanese Culture Class (Japan Study)
- 90 min × 4 days = 360 min = 6 hours
- Class contents: lectureon/ fieldwork relating to Japanese culture
- Fieldwork to various cultural spots (ex. Kinkakuji Temple, Kiyomizudera, and many other World Heritage Sites and cultural experience spots in Kyoto)
- Special lectures done by masters well respected in their fields

- Each student will be required to attend more than 2/3 of classes to receive a transcript.
- After a successful completion of the program, Ritsumeikan University will mail a certified academic transcript to your home address in your country.
- It will be sent to you one month after the last day of the program.
- If the transcript needs to be sent directly to your home university, you will need to make a request beforehand.
Participants are responsible for contacting the Japanese embassy or consulate in their home country directly to determine if they are required to apply for a short-term visa (aka tourist visa, not a student visa) in advance.
If it is determined that you need to obtain a visa, please notify the International Center.

- Participants will be placed into classes based on the information from their application and essay written in Japanese.
- On the first day of Japanese Language Class, you will take a placement test.
- Even in cases in which students request a class change in order to meet the requirements of their home university’s credit transfer policy, students may not move up or down in level without the teacher’s consent.
We handle all incoming and outgoing student exchanges at the International Center.
We provide comprehensive support from initial application procedures and academic life to sending out the final transcript at the end of the program.

The Medical Service Center offers medical assistance to students with health concerns. Consultations are available in English during certain times of the day.

Ritsumeikan BUDDY
What is a BUDDY?
Japanese BUDDYs from Ritsumeikan University will be here for you to support your life at Ritsumeikan. They will only speak in Japanese for you to fully immerse in the Japanese language. It will not be a 1-on-1 system but they will assist you in groups.
What’s the merit?
You will have opportunities to practice speaking Japanese and learn about Japanese culture. You can also interact and learn about recent Japanese pop culture, trending words, anime, and many other topics. BUDDYs might even become your life-long friends that you can meet even after program period.

Close to World Heritage Sites
Our campus is located in the north west part of Kyoto city, right next to Kinkaku-ji.
It is close to all the major tourist spots like Ryoan-ji, Nijo-jo Castle, Imperial Palace, and bamboo forest in Arashiyama.
Just hop on a bus or train after school and you can travel to all the beautiful tourist spots.
