Ritsumeikan University was established in 1869 as a private academy on the site of the Kyoto Imperial Palace by Prince Kinmochi Saionji, an eminent international statesman of modern Japan. It was then given the status of a university in 1922.

Ritsumeikan University now offers a wide range of courses in advanced studies in three campuses: Kinugasa Campus in Kyoto, Biwako-Kusatsu Campus in Shiga, and Osaka Ibaraki Campus in Osaka.

It promotes education and research collaboration with world-class universities and institutions. The number of partner schools is top-class in Japan.

Our campus is located in the north west part of Kyoto city, right next to Kinkaku-ji. It is close to all the major tourist spots like Ryoan-ji, Nijo-jo Castle, Imperial Palace, bamboo forest in Arashiyama, and so much more. Just hop on a bus or train after school and you can travel to all the beautiful tourist spots.

A. The Japanese language class helped me a lot with my conversational skills. I was able to ask a lot of relevant questions in regards to my daily life while staying in Japan. There is not much that I would change about the classes because I really appreciated the amount of speeches we had to present and how it put me out of my comfort zone in order to improve my Japanese.

B. I really loved how many activities we were doing. I honestly was full of emotion at one point because of how rare these excursions were, especially the maiko experience. I am truly grateful for being part of the program this way.

C. The best aspect of this program was learning Japanese in Japan from Japanese professors and being able to have conversations with Japanese people. This allowed me to have a very authentic experience.

D. This was my first time being away from home for over one month and I learned about being independent and taking care of myself. I enjoyed the independence and making new friends the most. I also liked traveling around Kyoto, seeing different sights and taking public transportation a lot!

E. I really enjoyed the opportunity to talk to so many different people from Japan in their own language. It was a great chance to improve my not only my speaking skills, but also my listening and understanding of the language.

F. What I liked the most about the language class is that we had the opportunity to have different teachers who spoke to us in Japanese. I was glad to have a different perspective on how Japanese is taught to foreigners in Japan versus how Japanese is taught to me in America.

G. I enjoyed being able to practice speaking in pairs. My speaking and listening improved a lot. I gained a lot of confidence in my speaking. I also learned that it is okay to make mistakes while talking as long as I know how to improve.
